Through the medium of glitter and paint on canvas, Manhattan artist, Camomile Hixon explores pop culture with super-sized words, images and symbols. There is a 70′s disco quality to the works reminiscent of mirrored car wash signs and gold lamé curtain calls. Certain pieces composed of huge glittering letters explore the layered meanings and subtle textures of words, a development from Hixon’s work as a songwriter and musician. She describes these paintings as “poetry fragments without the movement of melody”. Other paintings of fireworks and fragile flowers are meditations where she seeks to “expand moments in time where ephemeral beauty becomes something more tangible”. Hixon is the artist behind the worldwide interactive Missing Unicorn Project which was covered by the Los Angeles Times and she will also be responsible for the large kinetic flower sculptures to be seen across the front of the Voices Warehouse opening September 10th 2011.
Over the past year, Hixon exhibited solo art shows in New York City, Connecticut and Massachusetts. She created art installations for the Children’s Museum of Art in Soho, The Lyme Fine Art Association, and the Farmington Valley Art Center. On September 10th 2011, Hixon and her art will be featured on a new TV show, “Home By Novogratz” airing in 17 countries on HGTV at 10PM EST. In December, Kindle/e-reader cases of her design will be available internationally though Lightwedge Inc.
Hixon’s work is presently on view at the American History Textile Museum in Lowell MA, The Diane Birdsall Gallery in Old Lyme, CT and in The Hamptons at Maison 24. Her works are held in both public and private collections and she is represented by Tria Gallery in Manhattan, and the Diane Birdsall Gallery in Old Lyme, CT.
When a piece manages to cause an inner smirk, the art is working, and when it happens to be beautiful, and lift someone’s mood, the mission is complete.
