Jim Avery
From the artist:
One tends to expand on what one has already known or experienced. My background is in machines, electronics, and computers, but I also study the movement of biological counterparts for their smooth organic curves and movement. Mechanical movements are rapidly becoming a lost art, mostly because of the technology of electronics.
I like to expose people to the inner workings of machines, simply to try to build an appreciation for the visual aspects of the art. Da Vinci’s notebooks have inspired me to the mechanical art form, and I’ve also been influenced by pictures of a section of the Babbage computer.
Dimensional, sculptural, and kinetic or interactive mechanical movement is always intriguing to me. I am not always locked into one style or another but almost always work in metal. I’m elated if people walk away with just one provoked neuron fired off by some aspect of my work.
